From Realtor to DIY Advocate: Why I'm Teaching Homebuyers to Save $20k+
Most people would jump at the opportunity to save $15,000 to $20,000 on anything – that's not an insignificant sum of money. The savings alone makes it worth considering self-representation. And that's $15,000 to $20,000 or more on every property that you purchase. By the time you've purchased four or five properties, you've saved enough for another down payment on an additional property.
Think about it – self-representation is the most natural way we buy things. When you buy a car, you don't call up a buyer's agent to help with research and schedule test drives with the dealer. Instead, you do the research yourself, go to the dealership, test drive the car, sit down with the salesperson, request information, look at comparables, and negotiate the price. You review the standard legal documents they provide, sign them, settle your financing, and drive away with your new car.
I believe self-representation is the future of home buying. People are realizing that buyer's agents have been grossly overpaid for the service they provide. If I can make real estate more frictionless to transact, less expensive to transact, if I can empower people – I get far more satisfaction out of that.
